My questions to Flatland United, answered

Flatland United is something I came across recently when I joined Twitter. Flatmatters posted some stuff about it also. They(?) recently set up this website Flatland United and it's very curious to me. So I emailed them. I got a weird response, in the form of an odd "Tweet" that I've just noticed...

I followed the link and got..."A question too early!"

the reply is worth reading. here:

Below is the question and, an answer as best as can be made without official published directives or mission statement. This will enter the FAQ and, most likely will be altered by the Director or board members in the future.

Question from J.M.:

…specific question I had was this; where is the money going to come from to support high quality contests around the world? I know that even top sponsored pros today are not able to attend overseas events in most cases due to the costs involved. Prizes typically don’t even cover the expenses involved in doing such. I’d appreciate any further details you’d be willing to disclose.

Early Response (prior to fully drafted directives and mission – May 4 2001 – Visionary/Preceding Director):

This is kind of a chicken-egg problem, money comes from sponsors and partners. These groups need a quantifiable demonstration and proof of value, but to provide this information you need to be able run the events and collect the information to provide.
Now the current state of affairs within the world of flatland is stuck within the latter issue and, this is where Flatland United comes in.
By trying to tie together all the events in the world and measuring key elements as well as giving a global rider ranking system gives a measurable value of the events and the impact of riders (especially pro and pro-am) to sponsor investment.
We will try to provide sponsor and event reports demonstrating the value and potential return on investment in the world of flatland. As well as providing quality tools, reference sources and, common sponsor/partner core, to support event organizers and; trying to forge larger visabilty opportunities for sponsors, partners and, other events across multiple events.
It should be made clear that we are not trying to interfere with events, we are trying demonstrate and increase their value to attract and retain high quality sponsors and partners.
Once value can be reported, this opens up more options, both locally and globally. The ultimate goal is to help increase the benefits to the sponsors/partners, events and, riders so they can afford to attend and concentrate on events for the whole season, which again increases value and exposure of flatland."

I did not ask about the Cosmic Ranking System.
I did ask if they were a rider or former rider. That was not answered.
discuss.

  1. omg. this has got to be a hoax or a april fools prank or something....

if its real - these people are definetly not flatlanders.... BOTTOM LINE_ just give us the fucking money!!! and fuck off!! lol.

I'll tell you what i think this is - and I'm probably right - they mentioned that surfing was having the same problems and they found the solution (through whatever means) - now they see flatland as the same kind of oppurtunity- look at the language theyre using - its like they copied and pasted it from some other actionsport.... just replace the word flatland with surfing or whatever -

i'll tell you why these guys are definetly not flatlanders - They dont know that there already is a "ranking system" they arent following flatland and dont know much about it. these guys want to start a great movement - then take the time and do some fucking research ffs....

  4. thanks for the feedback tdot. you've touched on some of the same points that came into my mind. I find this very interesting. I still have a lot of questions...could it work? maybe? will it? I have no idea. I'd like to see contests become a thing where good riders could really get paid, you know? Something like that could possibly bring new contest riders into the scene and shake things up a bit. I guess we'll see...

  5. Also, everyone involved in flatland knows that the lack of money in the sport is a real problem that's been around for awhile now. I don't have a solution to that, but it is nice to see people making an effort to improve it. That been said, I'm still a little skeptical.
