My Rant on Making Better Flatland Web Edits

(appropriately revised version)
i recently wrote a really shitty article about making flatland videos. i got lost in the process of writing it, put it out there too quickly, and didn't say what i meant to say. i've taken out all the bullshit, and just written out some general points that i think are relevant when filming and making a flatland video:

pay attention to what it looks like and edit tight. feel the vibe of the rider.  keep the camera steady. don't overcook the editing, and don't stray too far from the real meat of the video. if you film yourself, move the camera to different spots during the shoot for variety. don't use music that sucks. if you have fun, the video will have fun.
most importantly, watch your video and make something that you are proud of.
don't hesitate to get help with things if it'll make for a better result.

Texas Toast | flatland prejam at the OG

Here's a little video I shot of the jam we had at the OG the day before Texas Toast came. It was a lot of fun. There are some big names in this video, but it's not about that, it's about the vibe. I hope you enjoy it, I've got much more coming soon.

YEEEOW!

Thanks a lot, RIDE BMX!

yeeeeooooooow!

In a couple days I'll have a big edit posted here with a lot of footage from my Colorado trip. Ramps and flatland too. If you pay really close attention during it and are first to find where I "photoshop" Hector Garcia into it, he's gonna hook you up with some really tight shirts*. In other news, TEXAS TOAST / TEXAS FLATLAND ROUNDUP is less than 3 weeks away! See you there!

photography

i've been branching out lately. no worries tho, i am currently editing a LOT of BMX footage for a new edit, with more filming dates already set. in the meantime, here are samples from my new love- portrait photography. i think with more practice i will get better results, but i'm pleased so far with my first two attempts!
posts on here are slowing down due to the fact that i'm publishing most of the banger content on www.global-flat.com now, so please stop by there once in a while to see what's new. i've also enlisted the help of a couple riders to help keep the flatstyle facebook page updated with new content. thanks guys!

my first publicity photo shoot- for a production of 'doctor faustus'. natural lighting, old manual lenses. i think some of them turned out fairly well. this was really interesting to me, and very satisfying. stoked to do it:

my first portraiture photo shoot, which was a real arm twister :) hitting many things i love; beauty, the female form, and great tattoos. really honored to be able to do stuff like this.

My Colorado trip feat. James McGraw

I recently traveled from Texas to Colorado, where I met up with James McGraw and had the time of my life! I don't think I have ever been to as many events in such a small time period as I did in my 5 days there.

Everywhere we went, I felt like a rock star being with him. We did a Keith King show on a closed street in downtown Denver during the USA Pro Challenge cycling race, rode at a private ramp park, did all day shows at the huge Colorado Springs Flea Market, sessioned a local park- including James riding on a dirt baseball diamond! We visited his practice spot, rode a couple random places, spent an evening at the absolutely breathtaking Memorial Skatepark, filmed a solo-wheel part on a mountain road, sessioned with Yella and the Yellow Designs Stunt Team (awesome!), went to a Jane's Addiction / Big Black Delta concert, and if that wasn't enough, spent an entire day riding, filming, and having a blast at the Prequel Contest (at which he got first place)! In fact I had so much fun I'm sure I'm forgetting some things!

The general vibe of the Colorado riders was incredible. I felt at home right away, and it really felt like I was among friends. Everyone was having a blast. I was very impressed with the riding scene there! It was a memorable trip for sure, and I'm really stoked to show you this new video of James at Home. He pulled some bangers, and seems to always be having a great time. It's inspiring. I hope to go back there one day!
Stay tuned for an upcoming Colorado Scene edit that shows a bit more from this amazing place.

today was a good day.

I could not be more stoked - I received my Freegun Underwear sponsorship package in the mail! I need to do some sit ups right away to show these off haha. These shorts are sexy!

My first package for my new camera setup arrived today 10 minutes later. This is just the first part of the rig I'm building. Dolly and rail system should be arriving shortly. After that, follow focus, matte box, and field monitor. It's gonna be really sick for tripod shots, and a study in thrift. I've been hunting out good values a lot lately :)

Because right now I'm putting my energy into bmx, and my money into camera, I end my session this way today. hahaha. I will miss you, tire! I feel so foolish :)

I have to give thanks to my lady for figuring out how to hook up the dual monitors. Multitasking time!

I am working every day for about a week till I fly out to Colorado for some bmx fun and filming. Huge thanks to both my employers and my sponsors for making this trip a reality. I'm really thankful and honored!

James McGraw at the OG

James is cool. He has a lot of enthusiasm for riding, and it shows. I had the pleasure of filming him recently during his stay here in Austin, by way of Colorado.

Nankai Freecoaster | Rebuild | Maintenance Guide

Last weekend I had the good fortune to team up with Robert Porter to create what we hope will be a valuable resource for years to come. I'm very pleased to present this tutorial. If you have any questions related to hub maintenance, please leave them in the comments for the video.

Robby says:

"This is a rebuild and maintenance guide for Nankai 3/8" and 14mm freecoasters. There is a lot of info on the web about these hubs and I hope this video will help complete some of the holes some people have in their info about them. Here are some of the references I have used over the years to help me understand these hubs. I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!"

kamerar dslr slider x austin flatland

I recently got this slider from Houston based company Kamerar, and have been itching to try it out. Big thanks to David and Tod for putting up with me :)
I would say this is a decent "first slider", and I look forward to using it more in the future. Oh, there's some great bike riding in this video also:

first of all, thanks Dave and Tod for letting me be a pest with the camera while ya'll rode :)

this was my first real use of the slider by kamerar

Freestyle Connection Team in Austin

This has been a great weekend so far. Jon "The Duke" Dowker and Dane Beardsley, as well as the rest of the Freestyle Connection Team, were/are in town for a few days stay, and stopped by the OG to ride with us.
It was a really nice surprise; I was out there with Randall, and we were just beginning to ride when this huge van pulled in carrying a trailer full of ramps, a handful of dudes, a cute little dog, and Jon's lady. I knew straight away that things were about to get awesome.
The crew were all super nice people; and everyone was a blast to ride with. Really good folks there.

I usually film this type of thing, but this time I decided not to. I did snap just a few photos before I left to help remember it by:

flatSTUDIO is finally up and running

Really happy today to tell you a little bit about, and show some photos of my video editing studio I've been working on these past couple of months. Today, the final piece arrived and it is now complete! My old laptop which has really struggled with HD video has been replaced with a screaming-fast beast of a PC, along with a larger monitor and some really loud speakers, making editing video a thousand times faster and more accurate.

I've painted the wall, put up art from friends, and found a cheap desk and office chair too. I went from having my laptop on the couch, to this- so as you can imagine, I'm extremely thankful!

My lab is a cross between a man cave and an office, and it's perfect for me. I've got my dog and really special things from my friends all around me here.
Huge thanks to my lovely lady, Mary, for putting up with all this nonsense, believing in me, and helping me realize my vision one step at a time.

above: my sweet puppy, eve

above: flatstyle logo vinyl sticker. a found a dirt cheap place online with really fantastic quality

above: signed Matt Hoffman poster that hb. sent me for a video i made. i treasure it.

Kani Plus 4, Kani Plus 1, Mostly True. Thanks  Jin and TAKU! wooden ninja sword i won at jomopro, and the super rad original artwork flatstyle fish by Yinfing Thao.

looking forward to filming more people this year!

computer setup: 23" LED monitor w/hdmi, pc: 16GB+16GB(readyboost) RAM, intel quad core i5 processor 3.0ghz, 2T hard drive, graphics card w/ 1GB cache, altec lansing surround speakers w/sub. this machine could eat my laptop for breakfast, i'm now able to edit with zero lag.
